 I realized when I was doing a semester of conference call classes, that a lot more people want critiques than, alas, writing classes. The trouble for you, if you‘re shopping online, is it’s hard to know how much to pay, and who’s reputable. The problem for me –at first—was figuring what’s fair for me and yet not overwhelming for you. Here’s what I learned: I can tell an enormous amount from exactly the same size manuscript publishers ask for when requesting a partial--fifty pages and a five-page synopsis. So much that, nine times out of ten, it’s a waste of my time and your money to read more than that. So I’ve decided—with much trepidation—to offer critiques of partials at a competitive flat fee instead of the dreaded hourly rate. Because if I can’t do a critique of 50 pages in a very few hours, that’s because the manuscript is so far from publishable you shouldn’t be spending the money. The two to three-page single-space critique will include an overview and also cover use of language, voice and viewpoint, plot, setting, characters, dialogue, pacing, and any specifics tailored to your particular book. You also get a follow-up phone call in which I’ll try to make things clear, cover even more specifics, and kick around possible solutions to problems.
