* There is only one good place on Bourbon St--Fritzel's, 733 Bourbon, which features traditional jazz. (See below.) The Marigny (a short cab ride from the Quarter) has several good places close together:

* Cafe Brasil, 2100 Chartres St., has wonderful late-night Latin-style music. Or try The Blue Nile, across the street. Or The Spotted Cat, 623 Frenchmen St.

* Snug Harbor, 626 Frenchmen, offers contemporary jazz. There's a restaurant here, but don't be tempted unless you're in a burger mood.

North Rampart Street offers The Funky Butt, 714 North Rampart, and Donna's, 800 North Rampart St., where you can find wonderful traditional jazz. (Note: It's best to take a taxi to North Rampart St. -- the neighborhood here is a little bit dicey.)

* House of Blues 225 Decatur St., (namesake of a book you might like) is usually a good bet.

* Check out the local weekly, Gambit, for schedules.
